Why is Branding Important For Your FIRST Team?

Does your FIRST team know what branding is? Do you understand how to utilize it and how it can benefit your team? Well unfortunately, you probably don't. And that is okay. Most teams don't. But that is why we are here.  

The idea of branding is actually a fairly new concept. Companies or businesses didn't truly start branding techniques and advertising campaigns until after the industrial revolution: around 1899 (Source). So it is still a new idea in the world. But even so, branding, now more than ever, is an extremely vital part of organization's success and future growth. 

Your FIRST team can also use branding techniques and concepts to grow and reach new heights. Whether your team wants to win an award at a regional, acquire new sponsors, gain public recognition, recruit awesome new team members, or have an healthy team culture, branding can help you achieve those things, and more. 

Okay, so how do you get started with his branding thing? What is it even?

Good question. There are a lot of definitions of branding, but this is what I want you to understand: Branding is your team's reputation. It helps you create a name for yourself through symbols, design, personal relationships, and team atmosphere that others (i.e. the public) can identify with, respect and trust. 

Do something for me real quick. Think of your favorite company for a second. Anything coming to mind? Is it Apple? That is one of my favorite companies. Is it Nike? Maybe it is Google? Whatever it is, think about why exactly you like that company. Do you like their products? Do you like their customer service? Do you like what they stand for? In reality, you probably like a couple of different things about this company and you don't even know it. 

Whatever the reason, you like that company because you trust them in someway. They have a good reputation in your eyes. To you, that company might be the bomb.com. But the crazy thing is, others might not feel the same way. They might have had a bad experience with the company's products or services, or they might not like what they company stands for. To some people, a company's reputation is good, to others, it is bad. 

Relating this back to your FIRST team, the situation is similar. Your team has a reputation, and that reputation is good to some people, bad to others. A person's conclusion of your team could be because of multiple different experiences they have had with your team. From simply viewing your website online, to talking with one of your team members at a regional. Your team's brand encompasses everything your team is and does.

If branding is your team's reputation, how do you control it? Well, the simple answer is you can't. You ultimately can't control how people view your team. I know, bummer right? But there are branding techniques and strategies your team can incorporate to give you increased positive outlook and a good reputation. But the main thing you and your team needs to understand is that your team has a brand, and that brand encompassess everything your team is and does: including its reputation. And your reputation has much to do with your team's possible success.
